Clear Aligners Q&A
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners are teeth coverings made from Dentsply — comfortable, clear plastic mouth trays used as a method of tooth alignment. They rest over your teeth and are virtually invisible.
That is why so many people prefer them over traditional "wire and brackets" brace technology. You can also remove them at mealtimes and when toothbrushing, which makes them both flexible and convenient.
Clear aligners aren't suitable for everyone. Before creating a treatment plan, Dr. Touni performs a full assessment to see whether clear aligners are right for you. He then manages the process from start to finish, from designing and creating the first aligner to assessing and refining each new aligner along the way.
What conditions can clear aligners correct?
Clear aligners are an effective and unobtrusive way of correcting multiple dental developmental issues, including:
- Overbites
- Underbites
- Excessive spacing
- Crowded teeth
Dr. Touni may also use clear aligners as part of phase one orthodontic treatment in children to correct misaligned primary teeth.
How do clear aligners work?
Dr. Touni consults with you to create a custom treatment plan. He starts with an initial consultation where he takes a digital scan of your mouth and impressions of your teeth. He also shows you a reconstruction of what your smile will look like once treatment is complete.
Dr. Touni creates each aligner himself, using the same materials used by commercial brands, like Invisalign® but a stronger version, so the treatment is more effective. He uses the molds and scans to create a series of clear aligners that progressively move your teeth.
Each aligner is sequential; you wear a set for 1-2 weeks and then replace them with the next aligner in the series. Dr. Touni makes the aligners in small batches so that he can make minute refinements based on how your teeth respond to treatment.
For the aligners to work, you must wear them for around 23 hours a day — removing them only to eat, brush, and floss.
During your treatment, Dr. Touni schedules regular check-ups to make sure the aligners are working as they should and makes adjustments if necessary. Once your teeth are in their new position, you’ll receive a final retainer to wear at night to prevent them from moving back.
What are the advantages of clear aligners?
Clear aligners are an extremely popular method of teeth positioning correction, and not just because they're so discreet. They're also easy to clean, comfortable, less likely to irritate or damage your gums and cheeks, and can even prevent tooth wear-and-tear.
Dr. Tourni and the team at Touni Orthodontics place your health and safety at the forefront of all they do.
